was established to honor and preserve the history of the 86th Infantry Division, which played a significant role during World War II. The foundation focuses on maintaining and improving the Blackhawk Division Memorial located at Camp San Luis Obispo, California, a site where the division conducted amphibious training in preparation for the Pacific Theatre. The memorial, which features a life-size bronze statue of an 86th Blackhawk Infantryman created by artist and Blackhawk veteran Dick Behrends, was dedicated in 2009 at the final reunion of the WWII Blackhawk veterans. It serves as a tribute to the soldiers’ service, sacrifices, and the camaraderie formed during their time in battle.
Incorporated in 2017, the foundation was initially funded by a bequest from John Solowitz, a WWII veteran who served in the 86th Division, further ensuring the memorial’s preservation.
